Video: Kanye West Live at Coachella

kanye west
Kanye West performed for nearly two hours at Coachella last night, repping a radically different career phase than we saw in his 2006 mid-day appearance. Chopping up the original “P.Y.T.” sample into “Good Life” was magical, he sported new Air Yeezys, 20 ballerinas, blah blah blah… Our secret favorite moment was suspecting that he used no vocal processing when he climbed the pitch staircase of up-up-ups in “E.T.” Thanks to Dunny Rosé for posting the individual songs;

FERGIE PLANS TO TAKE TIME OFF FROM MUSIC

Fergie

Don’t expect another Black Eyed Peas album anytime soon. Resident Pea Fergie revealed that following the completion of their summer tour, the group will take a break from recording and be “more selective” about the ventures and performances they do.
Fergie Ferg couldn’t help but share her excitement about her upcoming downtime. “I am so excited to take a break. The guys know that I’ve been waiting and it’s time and it’s exciting,” she told the AP. “We’ve had such a great run together and we’re still touring this year, just less, more selective and we’re not working [on an album]. Unless they’re doing one without me.”
And while fans might expect her to put out a follow-up to 2006’s The Dutchess, she’s going to focus more of her time on philanthropic endeavors. “I’m gonna get more into my charities. Charity work. I’m excited to do more of that. Give back, make it not so much about me, me, me, me, me,” she continued. “And having some free time. I have a football team that I’m a limited owner of, the Miami Dolphins, and I want to go to a game.”
Additionally, she’s setting her sights on her Fergie Footwear shoe line, which debuted last week. “Seeing the line progress has been wonderful for me because I get to see how things get tweaked. I get to see the different use of materials and these are all things that I’m learning,” she explained. “You know, I wasn’t trying to come into this and say I’m Christian Louboutin. You know this is a venture for me to express my creativity and to learn.”

MTV Base rallies fanbase to support Nigerian music legend in FELA!

Lagos, 20 April 2011: MTV Base (DStv Channel 322, STV, AIT) is to put its musical muscle and dedicated fan base behind FELA!, the award-winning tale of courage, passion and love that pays tribute to inspirational Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.  The triumphant story, featuring Fela Kuti’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, comes to Lagos’ New Expo Centre from 20-25 April 2011.

FELA! has been a huge Broadway and West End hit. Produced by Jay Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, FELA! tells the true story of the star whose soulful Afrobeat rhythms ignited a generation.  Inspired by his mother, a civil rights champion, Fela devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

Commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa, “Fela was a true legend of African music who was also recognised in the Legend category at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards.  MTV Base is very proud to be associated with the home-coming ofFELA!

MTV Base will be promoting FELA! extensively on its broadcast and social media platforms, encouraging fans to go and witness the musical spectacle, which features the original Broadway cast including Sahr Ngaujah as Fela and Lillias White as his mother, Funmilayo.

Reviewing FELA!, Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote, “There should be dancing in the streets.  The hot (and seriously cool) energy that comes from the musical gospel preached by the title character of FELA! feels as if it could stretch easily to the borders of Manhattan and then across a river or two.  There has never been anything on Broadway like this production.”  David Cote of Time Out New York, in giving it 5 out of 5 stars enthused, “FELA! is more than a musical; it’s an ecstatic phenomenon.”

In addition to rave reviews, FELA! has won numerous awards and received standing ovations from the likes of Mick Jagger, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Spike Lee, Ben Okri, Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington, Professor Wole Soyinka, Robert De Niro, and Hugh Jackman.  First Lady Michelle Obama and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan are also reported to have enjoyed the show.

FELA! won three Tony Awards in 2010 and after 14 months on Broadway and three months on stage in London, it stops off in Lagos before heading to The Netherlands and back to London, but is sure to receive the warmest reception in the land of Fela’s birth.

NIGERIANS 'STAND STILL FOR DA-GRIN' (One year on - Death of a music maestro: Dagrin (1987-2010) (1987-2010)

His about one year now that Da Grin was dead in an auto fatal accident.
His a tragic incident that happened at the early hours of Wednesday 14th of April, which involved the prolific rapper, Da Grin. The lyricist was said to have been coming from a night studio session when he ran his newly acquired Nissan Ultima into a parked truck in front of Alakara police station in Mushin. As at the time of the accident, Dagrin was left hanging between life and death before he was rescued by policemen on patrol. The policemen reportedly called his manager, Tunde after finding his number on Da Grin’s ‘last dialled’ list. We gathered that Dagrin was immediately rushed to Tai Solarin Hospital in Olosha where he was given first aid treatment before he was later transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) at Idi Araba in Mushin due to the inapability of T&S Hospital to administer needed treatment.
Witnesses have revealed excluseively to Questionmarkmag.com that contrary to the statement by the manager that Da Grin was coming from a studio session for his upcoming album; he was coming from a friend identified as James. We were further hinted that he got intoxicated during his stay with James over the night before he decided to call it a day. A by stander at the scene of the accident revealed that “he must have been drunk and over-speeding because the truck he rammed his car with has been parked at the front of the police station several hours before the tragedy occur, to buttress my point, when we ran to rescue him after the accident, a bottle of Hennessey was found in the car and the whole car was filled with the all sort of liquor induced odour“. Dagrin was said to be in accompany of his close associates, when the accident occurred. The damaged car has since been confiscated at Alakara Police Station in Mushin.
At the early hours of Wednesday, Questionmarkmag.com contacted his manager and he claimed that accident was a minor one and not as brutal as been speculated. “ I don’t know where you actually get this story from at this hour but at the same time we thank God, the accident wasn’t that fatal, he only sustains minor injuries but he’s feeling better now” his manager squealed. An insider who claims anonymity disclosed to us that at the hospital that no one hasn’t been allowed to visit him as his condition implies, “the Doctors say he’s improving, but they have to keep him in ICU until his condition stabilizes. He hasn’t been able to open his eyes or speak since yesterday. I believe they’ll move him from Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the ward once he comes round”, he quip. It took his management two days to issue a statement. Two days after the fatal accident, a statement was issued by the artiste manager that: Between 2 and 3 am on Wednesday14th of Aril, your favourites indigenous rapper, Olaitan Olanipekun aka Dagrin had car accident along the mushin area of Lagos State. He was on his way back from the studio, where he was recording tracks for his upcoming new album. He came out of the crash with cuts and bruises and has a successful operation to close a cut he sustained during the accident. He’s presently in the hospital, where he’s recovering.

KANYE WEST CLOSES COACHELLA WITH A BANG

Kanye West

Kanye West was crowned king at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. The hip-hop mastermind delivered an electrifying performance on Sunday night (April 17), closing out the three-day festival in Indio, Calif.
Opening his three-act spectacular with the instrumental to “H•A•M,” Mr. West was lifted above thousands of festivalgoers in dramatic fashion as the lyrics “Can we get much higher?” played. Clad in an open-chested top by Céline and light blue jeans, he made his way to the stage as dancers dressed as phoenixes pranced around to “Dark Fantasy” while Bon Iver provided backing vocals. Fireworks erupted over the desert as “POWER” blared from the speakers.
“This is the most important show to me since my mom passed,” announced Yeezy. “As many times [as] I thought about not being here, you all make it worth it.”
For Act 2, he broke out the 808s & Heartbreak, performing “Love Lockdown,” “Say You Will,” and “Heartless.” The M.I.A.-sampled “Swagga Like Us” preceded the stadium anthem “We Will Rock You,” before he spit his verse from Katy Perry’s “E.T. (Remix).”
Longtime fans were elated when he dipped into material from his debut with “Through the Wire” and “All Falls Down,” but it was “Gold Digger” and “All of the Lights” that received the warmest reception. Despite Rihanna’s appearance at the festival, she was a no-show during his set.
A wardrobe change gave way to Act 3. In his signature red suit, Kanye performed “Runaway” with ballerinas and G.O.O.D. Music’s Pusha T, dressed in all white. “Lost in the World” followed before “Hey Mama.”
“This is the last song of the night,” said ‘Ye before staging the dedication to his late mother Donda West, who was undoubtedly looking down and smiling.
