Movie: Love Birds

Rhys Darby and Sally Hawkins in a scene from the movie Love Birds.

Doug (Rhys Darby) is an average Kiwi bloke, with an average Kiwi job. He's a massive Queen fan, and things seem to be ticking over pretty well. Until his girlfriend leaves him and a rare New Zealand shelduck – shot in the wing – falls on to his roof.
Little does Doug know that the shelduck – later christened Pierre – is going to be a catalyst for change.
He takes Pierre to the zoo, where he meets bird expert Holly (Sally Hawkins).
She's dismissive and distracted at first, but once Doug decides to keep Pierre, sparks start to fly between him and Sally.
Love Birds is a cute, romantic comedy with a killer soundtrack. It's feather-light (no pun intended) with very little substance, but it doesn't apologise for that at all.
It knows exactly what it is, and plays to those strengths within the confines of predictability, and it works pretty well, not trying to punch above its weight class.
However, that does make it a slighter film than it could have been, and it feels like there's too much crowded into the time of the film, with storylines picked up and abandoned, which did leave me feeling a little frustrated.
Faye Smythe does her best as Doug's girlfriend in the opening scenes, but it's a largely wasted role, as the director doesn't really seem to know what to do with her. She gets shunted around a bit, and it's a bit distracting.
Darby won't light any fires as a romantic lead, but he has a kind of awkward, charming chemistry with Hawkins that just seems to work here.
Love Birds is a mildly pleasant way to spend a couple of hours that will leave you smiling and humming Queen tunes. It could certainly be worse.
