DVD review: I'm Still Here

i'm still here

I'm Still Here bills itself as a searing insight into the Hollywood machine, following one man's demise from award-winning actor to rap madman and seemingly exposing all kinds of shenanigans along the way.
Rubbish. The film - now revealed to be a mockumentary which saw Walk the Line star Joaquin Phoenix "retire" from acting to pursue a flawed hip-hop career - is nothing more than 100 minutes of a Hollywood star acting like a right prat.
Despite having no rapping abilities, Phoenix attempts to launch a hip-hop career and slowly goes mad, getting into fights with fans, drinking too much, flaunting a cocaine addiction and cavorting with prostitutes - all while first time director and fellow actor Casey Affleck's cameras are rolling.
But I'm Still Here goes nowhere near as deep as it seems to think it does, missing all those extra levels of satire that made genre leaders Borat and Bruno so enjoyable. Even real stars like Diddy and Ben Stiller, starring here in cameo roles, look bemused by the whole prank.
After half an hour, you'll be bemused. After an hour you'll be bored. And by the 90-minute mark you'll have probably turned it off and found something else to do.
Lose the beard and start asking for your old job back Phoenix - this mockumentary stuff isn't for you.
Extras: A directors commentary, deleted scenes and an alternate ending.
